A radiator is a metal or semi-metal device; the material used depends on the specific application. Most radiators function by transferring heat from water.

In automobiles, radiators are used to cool the water returning from the engine. In residential settings, they transfer heat from hot water supplied by a boiler into the building’s interior.
Radiators are made from various materials, including aluminum, steel, copper, and cast iron. In general, a residential radiator is a type of heat exchanger that extracts heat from a fluid—specifically the hot water circulating within the heating system—and transfers it to the surrounding environment through surface contact with the air and via thermal radiation.

In terms of heat transfer, copper offers the best performance but is not cost-effective due to its high price. Aluminum is the next best metal; it boasts high thermal efficiency and is corrosion-resistant. There are two methods used to manufacture aluminum radiators.
